Associate Professor in Cardiometabolic Health, University of Exeter Medical School
Prof David Strain is the clinical lead of the Diabetes and Vascular Research Centre at the University of Exeter Medical School, an honorary consultant in medicine for the older adult, Chair of the British Medical Association’s UK Board of science and the medical academic staff committee. In a pre-Covid world, he ran a community diabetes service for the older adult, works with the Chronic Fatigue Service team, and worked as an in-patient stroke consultant. His research focus was the health of older adults; ensuring the right patient gets the right treatment. This includes population-based research on pragmatic interventions, right down to mechanistic work exploring of benefits of medications which may offer the ability to repurpose drugs, and the exploration of microvascular similarities between diabetes and ME. Since March 2020, he has been heavily involved in COVID-19. He is the Clinical Lead for COVID at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, a service which received a visit from the GIRFT time due to it having one of the best set of outcomes in the country. He has run the COVID wards and been part of the team that have established a 7 day a week, 364 day per year Covid Medicines decision Unit. In his BMA role, he is working with NHSE and UKHSA to establish the key performance indicators for CMDU services once they move to ICS/ICB commissioned services. He is the BMA lead for long COVID, and has participated in the NHS Long-COVID taskforce and the APPG on the same subject.
