Designing for ourselves: longevity, retirement and embracing the future

18% of the UK population is over 65 years old and over the next 40 years this is predicted to rise by nearly a third, with those aged 80+ doubling to over 6 million people. It averages 5 years for an elderly care facility to move from planning to the first resident moving in. In 2023, 8000 care beds were made available but there is current demand for 50,000. We as architects need to design for our parents now, and for our children in the future. Melissa Magee and George Morris will discuss designing for longevity and embracing the future.
